Looking after your Cut Flowers and Floral Designs

Do have a read below so you can enjoy your cut flowers to the fullest, it’s full of useful tips!

Bouquets and Bunches

To enjoy your bouquet or bunches of cut flowers as long as possible, ensure your vase is clean, add the flower food as instructed on the sachet and mix with the correct amount of freshwater. The flower food will extend the life of the cut flowers as it contains the correct mixture of ingredients to nourish them whilst keeping bacteria at bay.

Remove all the packaging, so allowing the flowers to breathe, Do not cut the raffia around the stems as your bouquet has been hand tied for you, once in the vase if you need to loosen the bouquet then snip the raffia. This will keep it arranged as designed.

The stems should be cut at a 45* angle with sharp secateurs or scissors, removing about 2.5cm (1 inch) from the base of the stem. Please make sure that there is no foliage below the water line. Foliage in the water creates bacteria which is harmful to the flowers and will shorten their vase life. Keep an eye on the water level and top up with clean water daily if required. If you can, re-cut the stems and change the water adding flower food every 3 days.

Arrangements and Designs

For arrangements that have been created in floral foam, pin holders or chicken wire, such as our Basket/Trug designs, Funky Amazements and Mug designs; In order to ensure the longest life, top up the container with clean water daily as the containers and the floral foam can dry out very quickly. Pour in the water slowly, preferably over a sink or place where no damage can occur from any excess water escaping.

Your flowers should be placed, away from direct sunlight and radiators. Flowers do not like extreme heat, cold or drafts. Also, avoid proximity to fruit as fruit naturally produces ethylene as it ripens and this odourless gas will shorten the vase life of your flowers.

Maintain your flowers by removing any dying or dead flowers and any plant debris that has fallen in the water.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • Remove all pollen from flowers as they open to avoid the risk of staining.
